How to Compare Executive Coaching Companies: 7 Criteria

Published October 11, 2026 · By the Stratos Coaching Team — Certified Executive Coach (CEC)

Ranked lists rarely say how a company earned its place. Here are seven criteria a VP, SVP, or C-suite buyer can apply to any executive coaching company, and how Stratos Coaching meets each one.

Quick answer

What are the best executive coaching companies?

The best executive coaching companies prove behavior change instead of listing past clients. Judge any company on seven criteria: coach seniority, matching process, measurable goals, outside verification, confidentiality terms, sponsor involvement, and transparent pricing. Stratos Coaching builds every engagement around all seven, with coaches who have sat in the seat.

The Work

How should you read a list of the best executive coaching companies?

Treat a ranked list as a starting point and check who wrote it. Some lists are published by companies that appear on them, and some include paid placement. A ranking that does not state its criteria cannot tell a senior leader which company fits their situation.

The market is large enough that criteria matter. The 2025 ICF Global Coaching Study reports $5.34 billion in annual coaching revenue, a 17% increase since 2023, and 122,974 coach practitioners worldwide. More than half of coaching clients are employer sponsored, and 73% of coaches say clients increasingly expect professional credentials (ICF). With that many providers, a list tells you who exists. It does not tell you who changes behavior at the VP and C-suite level.

Stratos Coaching offers one-to-one executive coaching for VPs, SVPs, and the C-suite, plus sponsored programs for corporate buyers. Run the test below on any company, ours included. For a wider view, see how to choose among executive coaching firms.

The Criteria

What seven criteria separate one executive coaching company from another?

Seven questions sort the field faster than any ranking.

  1. Coach seniority. Has the coach held a seat at or above yours? Our coaches are current and former C-suite leaders who have sat in the seat.
  2. Matching process. Can you meet the coach before you commit, and can the company explain why this coach fits you? We cover this in how a coach is matched to a senior leader.
  3. Measurable goals. Goals set at the start in observable terms, agreed with your sponsor.
  4. Outside verification. Someone other than the leader reports whether behavior changed. This is where companies differ most, and the next section covers it.
  5. Confidentiality terms. What the sponsor sees, and what stays between coach and leader.
  6. Sponsor involvement. A defined sponsor role at the start, midpoint, and close.
  7. Transparent pricing. Public ranges before any sales call. Ours follow the executive coaching cost ranges we publish.

Criteria three and four decide most outcomes, and published lists say the least about them. See what a full engagement includes in our six month engagement guide and our executive coaching services page.

The Evidence

How should a coaching company prove that behavior changed?

Ask for the mechanism, not the testimonial. The Certified Executive Coach (CEC) curriculum behind our lead coach's practice sets a clear standard. It has the client choose one behavior that is “simple, specific, measurable, and stated in a positive way.” The behavior is framed as something to do, such as letting people finish speaking, rather than something to stop doing.

Other people then check the result. The client picks about five colleagues who each give monthly feedback, rating on a scale of one to five how often they saw the behavior. The goal is three consecutive months averaging four or five. The curriculum states the logic directly: “There is nowhere to hide when a client works to create a new habit, because others either see (and report) the behavior in action or they don't.” Learn more about the credential at the Center for Executive Coaching.

That is our own argument for buyers, not a claim the CEC makes about other companies: a firm that cannot describe its version of this loop is selling sessions, not outcomes. Our methodology describes how The Altitude Framework applies the same discipline, and how to know if executive coaching is working covers the mid engagement signals.

Investment

What do executive coaching companies charge?

Companies serving senior leaders typically charge $300 to $1,000+ per session, $5,000 to $20,000+ per six month engagement, and $7,500 to $30,000 for a full engagement over six to twelve months. Annual C-suite advisory runs $15,000 to $65,000+, and a 360 process adds $2,000 to $7,000. Our full breakdown is the cost of executive coaching guide, and why executive coaching quotes vary explains why quotes vary so widely between companies.

Training spend gives a useful contrast. Training magazine reports that companies spent an average of $874 per learner in 2025 (Training magazine 2025 Training Industry Report). A coaching engagement costs far more per person, so the standard of proof should be higher. Stratos Coaching prices each engagement individually, and the exact figure comes on a free strategy call.

Buyer's Checklist

What should you ask an executive coaching company before you sign?

Bring these six questions to the first call.

  • Who will my coach be, and which seat have they held?
  • Can I meet the coach before I commit?
  • How will we define the target behavior in positive, observable terms?
  • Who reports progress, how often, and what score counts as done?
  • What does my sponsor see, and what stays confidential?
  • What is the full price, including any 360 assessment, before I sign?

Your role shapes the right fit. See VP and SVP coaching for leaders at that level, C-suite coaching for CEOs and their teams, and corporate coaching programs when you are buying for several leaders. For the return side, read our guide to executive coaching ROI.

Peer forums

What people ask about executive coaching companies on Reddit and in peer forums

Is a coaching company better than hiring an independent coach?

Neither wins by default. A company adds matching, sponsor reporting, and consistent standards. An independent coach adds a direct relationship and sometimes a lower price. The seven criteria apply to both.

How do I spot a company that is mostly marketing?

Ask for the mechanism. A marketing heavy company talks about logos and platform features. A strong one explains how goals are set, who reports progress, and what happens at the midpoint if scores are flat.

Do large platforms and boutique firms really differ?

They can. Scale brings reach and a consistent process, while a boutique brings seniority and personal accountability. The test is the same for both: ask for the coach's background and the verification loop.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are the best executive coaching companies?

They are the companies that can show how behavior changed, judged on seven criteria: coach seniority, matching, measurable goals, outside verification, confidentiality, sponsor involvement, and transparent pricing.

How do you choose an executive coaching company?

Start with the coach, not the brand: ask which seat the coach has held. Then ask how goals are defined, who reports progress, and what the price includes. See executive coaching firms for more.

How much do executive coaching companies charge?

Companies serving senior leaders typically charge $300 to $1,000+ per session and $5,000 to $20,000+ per six month engagement. See the cost of executive coaching guide for the full ranges by engagement type.

How can you tell if a coaching company will change behavior?

Ask who reports progress, how often, and what score counts as success. A company that relies on the leader's own report, or that cannot describe a monthly check with colleagues, is selling sessions rather than outcomes.

What do executives say about executive coaching companies on Reddit and in peer forums?

The recurring advice is to judge the coach over the brand, ask for the progress method in writing, and be wary of vague pricing.
