How a Team Coaching Engagement Is Structured: What Team Coaching Services Include
Published October 31, 2026 · By the Stratos Coaching Team — Certified Executive Coach (CEC)
Team coaching services are sold as a package, but the engagement underneath has a specific shape. Here is what each part is, and what to ask a provider to put in writing.
How is a team coaching engagement structured?
A team coaching engagement is built around the team leader as the primary client, coached one to one, with whole-team sessions held between monthly and quarterly. It opens with a contract review, a measurable team goal, and confidential member interviews, then runs on three month reviews. Market cost is $500 to $2,500 per session.
What does a team coaching engagement look like at the start?
A team coaching engagement is a contract with two tracks. The first track is the team leader, who is the primary client and is coached one to one. The second track is the team itself, which the coach facilitates as a group.
The Center for Executive Coaching (CEC) team coaching toolkit, which our lead coach was certified under, opens the same way every time. Session one reviews the coaching contract and confirms the outcomes of the process, and the toolkit asks one question that most proposals never answer: “What’s the specific and measurable goal for the team?”
Assessment follows. The toolkit calls for interviewing team members about the team, which it likens to a 360 degree verbal with the team as the subject. Stratos Coaching treats these confidential interviews as the most valuable week of the engagement. For the room question, who attends and who observes, we cover it separately in who should be in the room for team coaching.
How often does the whole team meet the coach?
The CEC toolkit says whole-team facilitation typically runs on a frequency between monthly and quarterly. That is slower than most buyers expect, and deliberate: a team that meets every six to eight weeks arrives with live decisions, and the session has work to do.
Two details in the toolkit separate a structured engagement from a series of offsites. First, the coach interviews members before each whole-team session, then reports back what was heard and helps the team resolve it. Second, the agenda is set by where the team is: in the toolkit's words, “Usually the life cycle and key challenges of the team drive the agenda.” From session three on, the life cycle of the team decides what gets worked on, not a fixed curriculum.
Reviews close the loop. The toolkit builds in an engagement review every three months and a 360 degree assessment of the team leader every six months. One sample proposal in the toolkit pairs weekly one hour coaching for the leader with roughly bimonthly two day facilitated team meetings. The leader is coached far more often than the team meets. If you are weighing a team engagement against coaching individuals, our guide to team coaching or individual executive coaching works through that choice.
What should a team coaching services proposal specify?
Read a proposal for team coaching services against the structure above. It should name the leader as the client and state whether the leader’s own coaching is priced inside the package or separately. In the CEC toolkit it is a separate contract and budget from coaching for other members, which is a common surprise on the invoice.
It should state the team goal in a form someone outside the team could check. The CEC rule for individual targets is that a behavior is “stated as something to do, not something to stop doing (so that it can be observed and measured).” We apply the same test to team goals: if the goal is a thing to stop doing, rewrite it as something the team will do. “Stop surprising each other in the weekly meeting” becomes “bring every cross-functional trade-off to the Monday meeting before it is decided.”
Last, it should say who observes progress. The CEC team coaching toolkit does not prescribe a scoring method for team sessions, so this is our own position, not the toolkit’s: ask the provider how colleagues outside the room will confirm change, and how often. Our guide to what an executive coaching agreement should specify lists the other clauses worth negotiating, and our team coaching services page shows how we scope the work.
What do team coaching services cost?
Published market ranges for group and team coaching run $500 to $2,500 per session depending on group size and facilitator seniority, or $1,500 to $5,000 per participant for a structured multi-month program. A 360 degree process adds $2,000 to $7,000. We keep these figures in step with our executive coaching cost guide, which is the reference for every price we publish.
Two structural facts change the total. The leader’s one to one coaching is a second line item, and the interview rounds before each team session are real coach time that cheaper quotes often leave out. Our piece on why executive coaching quotes vary explains why identical-looking engagements land thousands apart.

What does the evidence support?
Two sourced facts frame the investment. Gallup research finds that managers account for 70% of the variance in team engagement, which is why the leader track is not optional in a team engagement (Gallup). The second is the one study that compares training with training plus coaching: Olivero, Bane and Kopelman (1997) found a 22.4% productivity gain from training alone and 88.0% when coaching followed (Public Personnel Management).
State the caveats when you use that number: 31 participants, one public agency, gains were self-reported productivity, and it studied individual managers, not intact teams. It does not prove a team engagement produces any particular return. For the program level business case, see our executive coaching ROI analysis.
What people ask about team coaching on Reddit and in peer forums
Is team coaching an expensive offsite with a new label?
It is when the contract has no measurable team goal and no leader track. Interviews before each session, a three month review, and the leader coached in between make it something else.
Do I have to coach the boss too, or only the team?
Coach the boss. In the CEC toolkit the leader is the primary client, and the leader’s coaching is a separate contract from the rest of the team.
What is a fair price for team coaching services?
$500 to $2,500 per session, or $1,500 to $5,000 per participant for a multi-month program, is the published market range. Leader coaching and any 360 degree process are the usual additions.
